About Edmonton Labour Party

The Edmonton Labour Party was set up in 1918 by Trade Unionists, Socialist Societies and Co-operative Organisations.  The Party was established to fight for representation of the Labour movement in Parliament.

It's first Member of Parliament was Frank Broad (elected 1922 - retired 1945), he was followed by Evan Durbin (elected 1945 - died 1948) and Austen Albu (elected 1948 - retired 1974).  The now President of Edmonton Labour Party, Rt. Hon. Lord Ted Graham of Edmonton, was the next Labour MP to be elected to Parliament for Edmonton in 1974.

Unfortunately Ted Graham was defeated by the Conservative Party candidate Ian Twinn in 1983, but in 1997 Labour regained control of Edmonton with Andy Love.

Edmonton MPs

The Edmonton Labour Party is based at Broad House, at 205 Fore Street in Edmonton. The building was first opened by the Rt. Hon. Clement Atlee MP in the early 1950's and named after Frank Broad, the first Labour Party MP to represent Edmonton.

How the party works
As a democratic, socialist party we welcome people to join the party from all walks of life and have their say and influence policy. We welcome membership applications from individuals, families, young people, students, workers, unemployed and older people - anyone with an interest in building a better Britain.

To newcomers, working out how everything fits together can seem a bit of a maze - but don't let that put you off as there's a common goal: ensuring the party remains open and democratic and helps maintain contact between the party, the people and the government. Our structure, with the popular policy forums, enables more people than ever before to have their say.

Where you fit in
New ideas are vital if the party is to grow and develop - and we welcome your views and experiences. From your local branch to the annual national conference, the party structure has been devised so that Labour Party members can have a say on policy and contribute to our next general election manifesto.
